Day 4: The Summer Palace
Day 4: Getting around Beijing by subway
If
an army marches on its stomach, so did this group. Fueling up
on a big breakfast of steamed buns & youbing before braving the Beijing Subway.

How many students does it take to read a subway map? In this case the more the merrier and the fact that everyone now knows exactly where they are going today means that no one should ever get lost |

Day 3: Rickshaw Ride to the Beijing Hutong district
After walking several miles through the massive Forbidden City, we took a rickshaw ride to the Beijing Hutongs - old traditional houses arranged around one or more central courtyards. Many have been cleared for new concrete and glass structures but quite a few remain despite this being the capital of one of the fastest growing countries in the world.
Our guide had arranged for us to meet and have lunch with a local family to experience how they live. While there, we learned how to make traditional Chinese dumplings (and then ate them). We also were taught the art of traditional Chinese paper cutting.
We had fun and a welcome rest of our feet after walking around the Forbidden City with a rickshaw ride around the Beijing Hutongs |
We learned how to make Chinese Dumplings from scratch before lunch before tasting their cooking. |
After lunch we learned the art of Chinese paper-cutting |
Lastly, we had a test of skill and creativity - painting Chinese Snuff Bottles |

Day 2: Our 1st Chinese breakfast
Our 1st Chinese breakfast at Ru Jia Hotel before braving the Great Wall.
Breakfast was a breeze - just like the Great Wall! |
Evening 1: Our First Chinese Musilm Dinner
Xinjiang kebab is a hit!
Our first dinner together in China and XinJiang kebabs were order of choice. They were devoured quickly despite the time difference and despite, or maybe inspire of, lots of airline food. Now that we are all fed, its time for bed to get us on the China time. Tomorrow we are off to the Great Wall.
Day 1: Arrived Safe and Sound in Beijing International Airport & Ru Jia Hotel
We arrived safely in Beijing after an eleven hour flight from San Fransisco. All went well. No lines at China immigration or customs. Our guide met us once we exited the secure area and lead us straight to our minibus. Check-in at the 'Home Inn' was a breeze. Alan Liu, our China Travel Agent took care of every detail. We are off to dinner at 830....
